The CUNY Academy Stewart Travel Awards for Assistant Professors

The CUNY Academy for the Humanities and Sciences invites applications from Assistant Professors at CUNY to apply for travel support to national and international conferences through the Stewart Travel Awards.

Professor Stewart, a groundbreaking linguist who was on the faculty of the Graduate Center for more than 25 years, passed away in 2002, the year the Stewart Awards were initiated.

The William Stewart Travel Awards provide grants of up to $500 to full-time assistant professors. The award is for presenting, chairing or moderating at a scholarly conference from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.

Previous award recipients who are otherwise eligible may apply but may get a lower award priority.  Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and early applications get special consideration.

People promoted to full-time Associate Professor rank can apply for our Stefan Baumrin Travel Awards for Associate Professors.

Additional requirements:

  1. Applicants need to retain and be able to submit their airline boarding passes. 
  2. We cannot reimburse expenses that were paid with points or by frequent flier miles. 
  3. When applying for this award, you may only apply for one Academy travel award per academic year.

The Fine Print: Your completed application consists of: (1) application form including your CV containing your home and college mailing addresses, and a copy of the conference invitation or acceptance letter or the conference program showing your name as a participant, and (2) Departmental Certification. Your application will be considered incomplete and ineligible for funding without all components of Parts (1) and (2). If you have trouble uploading your documents, fill out all other sections of the form and email your documents to stewarttravelaward@gmail.com with your CV and Conference Invitation/Program and Receipts in ONE message. Please include the word "TRAVEL" in your subject line. Do not send multiple emails as they will not be opened. We strongly encourage you to submit your application BEFORE April 15, 2019. The total amount of funds disbursed will not exceed the total of submitted receipts for the conference. Receipts for other conferences will not be supported. While you are entitled to receive funding from other sources for the same conference, you will not be reimbursed twice for the same budget item. We will inform you on the procedure for claiming your award. Take note, for airfare reimbursement, boarding pass must be submitted. If you are unable to attend the conference, please email us immediately so that we can allocate unused funds to other applicants. All funds not claimed within 45 days of the end period of the conference date will be released into Award funds for other applicants. While we have never had to do this yet, we reserve the right to cancel the entire award at any time.  Federal rules mandate that travel be on a U.S. carrier, if possible. Please see the Guidance for Federally funded travel Awards. An order issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo forbids compensation for travel to North Carolina and Mississippi.
